Terrible News Today

Today, the Bush administration announced that all federal protection of the Gray Wolf is to be revoked. This will allow hunters in the states of Idaho, Wyoming, and Montana to all but completely obliterate the wolf population. With only 1500 wolves in these areas, there is not enough to sustain their population. The new federal laws will allow killings of all wolves but 300. Even in Yellowstone National Park (where for over a decade, people fought for the reintroduction of the wolf into the park), the wolf could be killed on sight. Pups are not safe either, hunters are now allowed to use aerial gunning, traps, poison, and any other method to kill entire wolf packs.

~~The Bush administration has used OUR tax dollars to already buy two planes for the purpose of aerial killing of wolves, making it possible to slaughter an entire wolf pack within minutes!~~

Even though the Gray Wolf is still on the Endangered Species list, the Bush administration has disregarded that fact and made it legal anyway to kill wolves. This is blatently illegal and disgusting.

The wolf is a beautiful creature with which I have shared a deep connection with my entire life. I would be greatly saddened if the only wolves my children ever get to see are on documentaries from decades ago, or caged up in zoos. The extinction of the gray wolf is emminent.

Cruel Camera- you've GOT to watch this!

Last month, CBC aired a special called Cruel Camera, which was about animals used in the entertainment industry. I missed the airing, but it is available online- and it's incredible. Anyone who has any degree of compassion in their bones will be moved by this. It's a must see and a must pass along...

Twenty-five years ago, Bob Mckeown and a fifth estate crew stunned the country with an investigative report that showed that many of the wildlife documentaries we'd grown up watching on television (remember the famous footage of the lemmings going off the cliff or some of the memorable moments from shows like Wild Kingdom?) were staged for the television cameras. As well, they revealed that animals often died during the making of movies; all for the sake of the entertainment value.

Now, Bob McKeown and an investigative team have returned to the subject to find out what has changed since the fifth estate's first Cruel Camera documentary. What they found may astonish you.

Boycott the movie "Walk Hard"

The new John C. Riley film, Walk Hard, makes use of a baby chimpanzee “actor.” Chimpanzees used in entertainment are taken away from their mothers at birth, which causes irreparable psychological harm. Training methods are physically and psychologically brutal. Living conditions are deplorable, and once they grow into big, strong chimpanzees (who can no longer be dominated) they are usually dumped at roadside zoos or other substandard facilities. Often this means they are condemned to solitary confinement.

Did you know that chickens, pigs and calves can't move on many farms?

I am collecting signatures for a very worthy grassroots cause. Californians for Humane Farms is trying to get a proposition on next year's ballot that would require farms in the state to have cages big enough for the animals to stand, sit and turn around. That is all this measure calls for. It has already passed in Arizona and Florida and is law in Oregon too. Let me know if you would like to sign my petition to give voters a chance to change this cruel farm practice. We need 650,000 signatures by Feb. 22, so please consider volunteering to gather signatures. The Web site is: humanecalifornia.org/. Animals, refered to by John Muir as our horizontal brothers, have long been recognized as essential to our development and wellbeing. Thoughout history they have played a major role in human thought and culture.They inhabit our myths, fables, proverbs, and stories. There is a profound, inescapable need for animals among all peoples, for while animals have inhabited a world without people, we have never lived without the companionship, example, and practical help of animals.

Today, because of the widespread pollution of air and water, the rapid expansion of cities, and the destruction of wilderness habitat, we are seeing an imminent and irreversible loss of untamed animal life. We can only guess at the future effect on our children of living in a world in which elephants exist only in zoos, the great whales no longer fill the seas with their song, and the remaining forests are silent.

The fact that so many of us are increasingly isolated from the presence of animals may contribute to the growing despair we feel. Direct encounter with animals, meeting them eye to eye on their own ground, evokes a sudden wonder and respect. Their vivid life brings us alive to the source that creates and sustains all beings. Without such encounters we risk losing that part of ourselves which most deeply resonates with nature - the heart of compassion.

If our greatest loss with the animals has been to lose touch with the reality of their existence, our second loss has been to banish them from our minds. We assume they have nothing to teach us about the predicaments of our existence. We no longer know how to listen to the wisdom of the various four legged, six legged, finned and winged creatures that share our life on this Earth. We forget they are ancestors as well as kindred. Long before we existed they worked out the round of life in thousands of variations, as though anticipating the experiments of human cultures.

Now, more than ever, our powers of empathy and compassion are called upon. We are asked to awaken to the plight of our animal relatives, to let their beauty and power come alive for us once more. We are members of a human family and society, but the presence of animal "others" enlarges our perception of the self beyond the city and opens us inward to that ground of being where live the lizard and monkey, the fish and the bear.

These are our relations. They are, like us, offspring of the great mystery, and necessary parts of a balanced and living whole.

Hello, all. I received the below promotional email through Travel Zoo today. It's hyping a big Virgin America sale. (Actually, the sale's not that big -- there are lots of flight sales going on.) Anyway, one of their big selling point seems to be their leather seats. I'm going to write to them that their leather seats are reason enough for me to not fly their airline -- I'll take somebody else's deal. Voters banned this extreme practice but allowed it for public protection. * HB 2971 overturns voters' will by allowing the unacceptable practices of baiting and hounding bears and cougars to be used at the discretion of ODFW. Current law allows hounding for damage-causing cougars and to protect public safety - this bill will allow indiscriminate killing of cougars that caused no harm or threat. More cougars were killed this year than in the history of the state without dogs; HB 2971 will increase that number and it is not needed and it's not the answer.

New Bill Would Roll Back Voter Approved Ban on Hounding of Cougars

Last year, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) unveiled a plan to kill many of the state’s cougars. Despite strong opposition to the Department’s plan, the ODFW has moved forward with implementing the lethal control program. According to the Associated Press last week, “A state wildlife agent trapped and shot two young cougars in Jackson County, the first of two dozen to be killed in that part of the state in a study of whether reducing populations of the animals improves public safety and reduces the loss of livestock. Nine cougars have already been killed in north-central Oregon as part of the study, state figures show.” Tragically, the ODFW intends to significantly reduce Oregon’s cougar population because it claims the animals present a growing menace. To make matters worse, opponents of the 1994 ban on hound hunting of cougars have introduced legislation (HB 2971) that would permit the ODFW to deputize sport hunters to kill cougars. The bill would allow these “agents” to use hounds for hunting cougars – essentially rolling back the voter approved ban.

Contrary to the ODFW’s claims, cougars are not a threat to public safety. There has never been a verified cougar attack on humans in Oregon. Because attacks are so rare (the odds of being attacked by a cougar are less than winning the lottery), it is misguided to use lethal control that science shows is ineffective. And nothing in the plan would prevent an attack. According to cougar expert, Dr. Rich Hopkins, the agency’s plan “would not reduce the risk of being attacked in Oregon, as the current risk is so small as not to be reasonably measured. Those who live or recreate in cougar country expose themselves daily to many more risky activities and yet they never consider nor concern themselves with the true risk these activities pose.” The ODFW’s continued emphasis on killing cougars as a “management” tool will divert resources away from techniques that are far more effective in reducing conflicts between cougars and humans, such as appropriate land-use planning, improved animal husbandry, and comprehensive public education. Oregonians can take steps, like avoiding feeding wildlife, bringing pets in at night, sheltering domestic farm and ranch animals, installing motion lighting around homes and animal enclosures, recreating with others while in cougar country, and educating their families about cougars – without instilling undue fear – to avoid conflicts with the wild cats.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP STOP THE SLAUGHTER

1.) WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF YOUR LOCAL PAPER CONDEMNING THE ODFW’S PLAN. See sample letter to editor and talking points below. Be sure to add your own personal touches to the letter so that it does not appear to be a form letter. Letters to the editor should be no longer than 250-300 words. If your letter is published in your local newspaper, please forward a copy of it to Brian Vincent, Big Wildlife, at: big_wildlife@shaw.ca

2.) URGE YOUR STATE LEGISLATOR TO OPPOSE HB2971. Tell them HB2971 would permit the ODFW to hire contract cougar killers, essentially giving sport hunters even more opportunities to gun down big cats. The ODFW plan is fatally flawed. Deputizing hunters to do the dirty business of killing cougars won’t make the plan any better. Dear Editor:

Oregon’s premier wildlife species, the cougar, is once again in the crosshairs. In 1994, Oregonians overwhelmingly approved Measure 18, which outlawed hound hunting of cougars. Since then, hunting interests and their allies in the legislature have repeatedly tried to roll back the hounding ban. In addition, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has released a plan that calls for killing thousands of cougars under the guise of “management.” The ODFW claims that killing many more cougars will keep communities safe. These policy maneuvers amount to a double-barreled attack on cougars.

Cougars are not a threat to public safety. There has never been a verified cougar attack in Oregon. Because attacks are so rare (the odds of being attacked by a cougar are less than winning the lottery), it is wasteful to use lethal control that science shows is ineffective. Besides, there are simple steps people can take to avoid conflicts with cougars.

For example, don’t feed wildlife. Predators tend to follow prey. Don’t leave pet food outside as food may attract cougars. Keep your pets indoors or secure them in a covered run. Shelter domestic farm and ranch animals. Because cougars depend on surprise to catch their prey, installing motion lighting around your home and animal enclosures may keep cougars away. Hike, bike, and run with others when you’re in cougar country. Educate your family – without instilling unnecessary fear – about cougars. Teaching children to respect and revere wildlife will help them avoid conflicts while appreciating nature. Never approach a cougar and never run from a cougar since running may trigger their instinct to chase.

We are blessed to live in a state where cougars roam. As good stewards of Oregon’s natural wonders, we can peacefully co-exist with our wild neighbors.

Peter Young is Free!!

Animal Liberator Peter Young Is Free!

On Thursday, February 1st, Peter Young walked through the doors of the Victorville FCI II facility and into the free world. He was greeted by a small crowd and immediately taken to a celebration dinner in Los Angeles. To quote Peter’s toast (of coffee) that afternoon: “Here’s to being liberated”.

February 1st as a release date has long been in a state of uncertainty. Peter’s pending charges in South Dakota have left this date in limbo for the 13 months since they were filed. It was not until 6 days before his scheduled release that he learned the news: South Dakota authorities had informed his attorney in private they would not be seeking to obtain custody at that time, and that after nearly 2 years in prison for liberating animals – Peter Young would soon be walking free.

A celebration dinner was quickly arranged for the evening of Peter’s release, with friends and supporters coming long distances to greet Peter at the prison doors. At 9 am, he exited the lobby doors and stepped into the free world.

As can be imagined, Peter has many plans for his new life, one of which is to maintain contact with all those who have supported him through these two years. POM Wonderful Halts Animal Testing!

In a letter to retailers on Wednesday, POM Wonderful executives stated they would stop cruel and unnecessary animal testing on their products, effective immediately. Coming less than 24 hours after Whole Foods Markets threatened to pull POM products off the shelves April 1st if animal testing was not stopped, the move was an unmitigated victory for animal activists who have been protesting POM Wonderful executives and owners Stewart and Lyda Resnick for months.

"POM Wonderful pomegranate juice has ceased all animal testing and we have no plans to do so in the future," Lynda and Stewart Resnick, owners of POM parent company Roll International, wrote to all POM retailers by e-mail or post on Wednesday. Ironically, only last Saturday, company owner Stewart Resnick exited his Beverly Hills mansion and yelled at activists protesting there: "I don't care if you protest me for 45 years - I will never stop testing on animals!"

After being exposed last year as funding cruel and unnecessary animal experiments, in which baby mice were deprived of oxygen and rabbits had their penile arteries severed, POM has seen legal demonstrations at the homes of its executives and owners in Los Angeles as well as a recent claim alleging product tampering on the East Coast, where an anonymous communique to the North American Animal Liberation Press Office stated that 487 bottles of POM juice had been tainted with some kind of gastrointestinal irritant. Wild Oats grocers pulled the product off their shelves at that time.

The National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Better Business Bureau has recommended POM Wonderful discontinue its "puffery" and hyperbolic health claims regarding its pomegranate juice. NAD Director Andrea Levine reported that the claims were the strongest she'd ever seen for a food product, yet POM continues to make outrageous claims that its juice benefits cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's disease.

As detailed in a company press release last month, POM vice-president Fiona Possell resigned her position as company spokesperson, acknowledging animal rights activists as the reason for her resignation. The North American Animal Liberation Press Office is currently seeking a written statement from POM Wonderful detailing their promise to stop testing on animals, either in-house or through the continued use of outside facilities such as UCLA.

What Is the Problem?

Demand for bear gallbladders, bile, and paws has made bears more valuable dead than alive. The sum of saleable parts can make a dead bear worth in excess of $10,000. An average sized bear gallbladder commands as much as $3,400 in Asia. A single serving of bear paw soup in an exclusive restaurant in Asia can fetch as much as $1,400. Asian countries such as China and South Korea are the leading consumers of bear products.

Why Are Bear Parts Valued?

Bear gallbladders and bile are used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of illnesses including fever, liver disease, convulsions, diabetes, and heart disease. A person who eats bear paws is believed to acquire the strength and vigor of a bear, and the consumption of bear flesh in believed to enhance one's virility. Clinical research analyzing the medicinal properties of bear gallbladders indicates that they may be effective for treating a number of ills. However, other natural substances already accepted in traditional medicine, as well as synthetic substances, can be substituted.

Are Bears Threatened by the Trade?

Yes. There are 8 species of bears (brown bear, American black bear, Asiatic black bear, polar bear, giant panda, sloth bear, spectacled bear, and sun bear). Each of Asia's 5 bear species—the brown bear, the Asiatic black bear, the giant panda, the sun bear, and the sloth bear—has suffered from the effects of hunting for the Chinese medicinal trade, as well as from habitat destruction that threatens all the Earth's wildlife. With the exception of pandas, of which fewer than 600 exist in the wild, little is known about the population levels of any Asian bear species other than they are in decline.

While having relatively large populations, America's black and brown bears are increasingly being poached for the bear trade, as are Russia's brown bears on the Kamchatka peninsula. There is little evidence of the poaching of polar bears or South America's spectacled bear.

Aren't All Bears Protected from Trade by International Law?

No. Most species and populations of bears are listed on Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which means that their international commercial trade is forbidden. However, some populations of the brown bear, as well as the American black bear and polar bear, are only on CITES Appendix II, which means international trade is legal and regulated by permit. Inconsistent CITES protections allow traders in Asia to illegally trade in the parts of endangered bears simply by falsely stating that the viscera comes from Appendix II bears. Customs officers cannot tell the difference between the gallbladders of Appendix I and II bears.

What about Laws in Countries That Are Major Consumers of Bear Parts?

Taiwanese law bans the sale of bear parts, but the law is not enforced and bear gallbladders, bile, and paws are widely available. Chinese law allows the sale of bear bile extracted from live bears on government-sanctioned bear "farms" and bans the sale of other bear parts, but the laws are not enforced. South Korean and Japanese laws do not address the trade in bear parts.

Aren't U.S. Bears Protected from Trade by Domestic Laws?

No. The U.S. Endangered Species Act affords protection to only a few species and populations of bears: giant pandas, Mexican grizzlies, Asiatic brown bears, Italian brown bears, and Baluchistan bears (which are considered endangered), and Louisiana black bears and grizzly bears (which are considered threatened). States manage bear populations and regulate trade in bear parts; 11 states allow the sale of bear parts, 34 states ban the sale of them, and five states have no laws on the trade. The growing illegal trade in parts from poached bears is facilitated by this patchwork of state laws. Whole bear carcasses are being found with only their gallbladders and paws missing. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agents have arrested a number of people in recent years for trading in bear parts. Parts of American bears are destined for Asia, as well as to Asian markets in the United States and Canada.

What about China's Government-Sanctioned Bear Farms?

In the 1980s, China recognized that their supply of wild bears for use in traditional medicine was running out. Instead of trying to discourage the use of bears, China began experimenting with the extraction of bile from living, captive bears. According to Chinese officials, the bile produced by a single captive bear in one year is equal to that obtained by killing 44 wild bears; over a bear's five-year production span, 220 wild bears' lives are saved. Today, there are an estimated 7,000 bears on China's farms and the use of bear bile is increasing, as are the number of bears on farms.

But the extraction of bear bile, and incarceration of bears on farms, is horribly painful. The bears are kept in tiny wire cages, so small that the animals often can not sit up or turn around. A catheter-like tube, or a surgical steel tap, is painfully inserted into their gallbladder from which the bile is extracted. Infections often develop where the bile leaks around the insertion. Many of these bears go crazy from the pain, boredom, and frustration. Moreover, bears continue to be removed from the wild to stock the farms, placing Asia's bear populations in further jeopardy.

Humans killing America’s lion in record numbers

How many mountain lions are there in the United States? No one can answer this question. On the other hand, the question of how many mountain lions are killed by humans in the United States can and is answered in a report released today by the Mountain Lion Foundation.

“Humans are killing more mountain lions today in the western United States than we did when the official government policy was to eradicate them,” stated Chris Papouchis, conservation biologist for the Mountain Lion Foundation.

This report documents the extent, causes and distribution of human-caused mountain lion deaths in the American West from 1997 to 2004. During this period, in eleven western states, nearly 30,000 mountain lions were killed or an average of 10 mountain lions killed each day by humans. Sport hunting is the cause of 85% or nearly 25,000 of these deaths.

Further, analysis of where mountain lion deaths occur reveals a number of “mortality hotspots” in the northern Rocky Mountains and in Utah, where mountain lion population declines are being reported by state wildlife agencies and independent researchers. This report raises many questions for state wildlife agencies, especially in light of reports released earlier this year which highlight 1) the ineffectiveness of random killing of mountain lions for public safety and 2) the importance of mountain lions to the health of the natural landscape.

“Right now no state wildlife agency can demonstrate that it is managing the mountain lion for sustainability,” said Lynn Sadler, Mountain Lion Foundation President and CEO. “The stakes are far too high to let this continue unchecked.”

Wildlife activists say recent reports of bald eagles and Canada lynx being caught in hunters’ traps provide additional ammunition to a lawsuit that aims to ban trapping in parts of Maine inhabited by the federally protected species.

Officials with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife confirmed Monday that two bald eagles and four Canada lynx have been caught inadvertently in traps in recent months.

All four of the lynx were re-released into the wild. One of the bald eagles, found snagged by a talon in a trap in Leeds last week, was released over the weekend after several days at a wildlife rehabilitation center.

The second eagle, which was discovered Nov. 30 in a trap near Millinocket, had to be euthanized Friday because its leg never healed, said DIF&W spokesman Mark Latti.

News of the trappings comes as DIF&W is preparing a formal response to a lawsuit on the very topic of eagles and lynx being trapped accidentally. Both species are protected from harm under the federal Endangered Species Act.

The Animal Protection Institute is seeking a court order to end any trapping that could inadvertently capture, injure or kill eagles, lynx or gray wolves. The group has documented nearly two dozen inadvertent trappings of lynx and eagles since 2001, not including the six recent reports.

The California-based group, which has several hundred members in Maine, filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Bangor back in October. The judge is waiting for DIF&W’s formal response, due next week, Latti said.

A representative of the Animal Protection Institute’s legal team could not be reached for comment Monday. But Daryl DeJoy, executive director of the Wildlife Alliance of Maine, said he believes the reports give the lawsuit even more legitimacy.

"This is just the tip of the iceberg. These are the reported ones," DeJoy said, echoing earlier comments made by leaders of API.

The Wildlife Alliance of Maine, whose members say they are committed to "fair chase" of game and respect for wildlife, is not a party to the lawsuit. DeJoy, however, has supplied information to API on trapping.

Latti said at least two lynx also have been killed by cars. Added together, the incidents suggest to Latti that lynx are doing very well in the state.

"We have a thriving population of lynx in Maine," he said.

Lynx management has long been a hot-button issue in Maine. For years, biologists questioned whether the cats, which grow up to 25 pounds, were even living and reproducing in the state.

Now, hunting and trapping groups claim the snow-loving cats are thriving in Maine’s commercial forests thanks to silviculture techniques that create prime habitat for both the lynx and its primary prey, the snowshoe hare.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently cited those conditions as well as its ongoing relationships with timber companies as a reason for not designating more than 10,000 square miles of Maine forests as critical habitat for lynx. The decision has angered environmental groups.

Mark McCollough, an endangered-species biologist with the USFWS office in Old Town, said the federal agency is working with state officials to develop an "incidental take permit" that would protect the state if eagles or lynx are inadvertently injured or killed in traps.

Maine has roughly 2,500 registered trappers laying thousands of traps throughout the state for a variety of fur-bearing animals, such as beaver, fox, fisher, marten, raccoon, otter, skunk and weasel.

The traps that snagged the two eagles recently were both set legally, but McCollough said he hopes to review with DIF&W officials the state’s policy on allowing exposed carcasses or other meat as bait, which can be tempting to eagles. The smell of hidden meat still could attract desired prey while not being visible from the air.

McCollough said he also was encouraged by the number of trappers who followed the law and reported catching lynx, although he suspects there are some that are never reported.

A representative from the Maine Trappers Association could not be reached for comment Monday.

[High-resolution image ] A former employee of Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine told The Epoch Times during a recent interview that the Sujiatun Concentration Camp in China was actually a part of a hospital. The concentration camp has engaged in taking organs from Falun Gong practitioners when they were still alive and selling the organs. Since 2001, the concentration camp has secretly detained approximately 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners, none of whom have been able to leave the camp alive. The hospital removed many kidneys, livers, and corneas from the practitioners. After the organ removal, the practitioners were thrown into an incinerator, which was converted from a boiler. Their ashes were dumped together with burned charcoal.

Organs from Three Quarters of the 6,000 People Were Removed
Those whose organs were removed were in various states of health. Because many of the victims were illegally detained, there was neither an arrest warrant nor identification as to who these people actually were. Often after their organs were removed, nobody claimed the bodies. Sometimes their bodies were picked up by crooks who pretended to be their family members.

About three-quarters of the 6,000 people died after their hearts, kidneys, corneas, or skin was removed; their bodies were then burned. This witness, whose family member participated in the removal of Falun Gong practitioners' organs, said that approximately 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners remain in the hospital. She was afraid that the authorities would kill all of them to destroy evidence.

The Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine is located at 49 Xuesong Road, Sujiatun, Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, China. It was the first hospital in China to specialize in the heart, the brain, and surrounding blood vessels. The hospital is composed of several organizations, including the Liaoning Traditional Chinese Medicine College Teaching Hospital and the Shenyang Thrombosis Treatment Center.

Concentration Camp Details
The hospital site is 21,087 square meters, with 17,564 square meters of building area. It employs 460 people in 24 departments and 20 specialized offices. Information from the Chinese government shows that the hospital was established in December 1988, and was formerly named the Shenyang Research Institute of Thrombosis and Liaoning Province Thrombosis Treatment Center of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine. In June 1998, it was renamed China Traditional Medicine Thrombosis Treatment Center.

The Chinese Business Morning View said in a story on July 4, 2004, that a farm worker died of abnormal causes in Sujiatun, Shenyang and was later cremated. The death certificate was provided by the Chinese Medicine Thrombosis Treatment Center in Sujiatun. The news caused a stir in China.

Questions were posed by the reporter and answered by the staff member being interviewed.

Epoch Times: Did the hospital's medical staff inside the concentration camp know about this?

Answer: This hospital has a small number of officials and some doctors involved secretively in the operation of organ harvesting. Some other staff in the hospital knew about this, but this is absolutely a taboo [to talk about]. They all are afraid of being killed or courting trouble, so they all avoid the issue. Only those highly trusted doctors could be chosen to be the surgeons for organ harvesting operations.

ET: Were Falun Gong practitioners alive when their organs were harvested? Did their families know about this?

Answer: Falun Gong practitioners who were imprisoned there came mostly from Dabei Prison, Masanjia Labor Camp, and other prisons in Shenyang, or they were Falun Gong practitioners arrested in parks or residential homes. Because they refused to denounce Falun Gong, they were arrested without formal warrants, and their families did not know their situation. Many did not even have their names [recorded]. In addition, since the Chinese authority exercises a policy of "not being responsible" for killing Falun Gong practitioners, the death of Falun Gong practitioners is not a very big issue for prisons. The Chinese Communist Party persecutes Falun Gong, [but] these medical personnel were told Falun Gong practitioners were facing death because they killed people, or they were sentenced to death because of crimes, or they had become insane from practicing Falun Gong.

Those Falun Gong practitioners whose organs were harvested came from several types.

Organs harvested from live bodies are worth far more than organs taken from dead bodies. Many Falun Gong practitioners were still alive when their organs were taken. After their organs were cut out, some of these people were thrown directly into the crematorium to be burnt, thus leaving no evidence. For some others, after their organs were stolen, the doctor sewed up the wound and asked the family or family representative to give a signature for cremation. Family members did not know at all that the dead had their organs taken out.

Furthermore, there were some healthy Falun Gong practitioners in prisons in other areas who were injected—without their knowledge—with psychoactive drugs that made their minds confused. They then were transferred to Sujiantun concentration camp to suffer further torture, till in the end their organs were harvested and their bodies were cremated in secret.

Among the Falun Gong practitioners whose organs were harvested, some were weak and some were healthy. Since most of them were illegally arrested, there were no arrest warrants or identification cards. After their organs were taken out while they were still alive, no one came to claim their bodies; or [sometimes] people using fake identities claimed their bodies.

None of these people have come out [of the concentration camp] alive; three-quarters of these 6,000 people have died, having their hearts, kidneys, retinas, and skins harvested and their bodies disposed of. I think now about 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners are still in this hospital, and I am afraid now that the authority will destroy all evidence and kill them.

Question: How did you know these things? Were you yourself a doctor involved in organ harvesting?

Answer: I worked at the Liaoning Provincial Thrombosis Hospital of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Shenyang. This is exactly where this concentration camp is located. One of my family members was involved in the operation to harvest Falun Gong practitioners' organs. This has brought great pain to our family.

Question: Please tell us what you knew about.

Answer: From 2001, our hospital started to detain Falun Gong practitioners. At the beginning, these people were detained in the single-storey houses in the back yard of the hospital. Later, the hospital authorities demolished the single-storey houses, and it was unknown where in the hospital the Falun Gong practitioners were transferred. Many staff of the hospital discussed in private that these Falun Gong practitioners had been secretly transferred to the underground chambers of the hospital. According to some people working inside the hospital, the hospital has a huge system of secret underground chambers.

At the time when we went to work there, the person in charge of logistics and purchasing in the hospital said that the quantity of disposable sterile gloves used for operations and daily supplies that the hospital authorities asked to be purchased had increased dramatically. The logistics people estimated based on the scale of purchases at that time that there were at least 6,000 Falun Gong practitioners detained in this hospital.

These Falun Gong practitioners were not detained in the 4-story building under the in-patient department and administration at the front of the hospital, in order to keep the hospital staff from seeing them at all. We only occasionally saw Falun Gong practitioners being sent on a mobile intensive care bed to the first floor for physical examinations. These people were very weak. For the majority of the Falun Gong practitioners, nobody knew where they were being secretly kept. While they still did not know where these people were kept, some staff inquired to the hospital authorities about why so much food and so many sterile gloves and daily supplies were purchased. The hospital authorities said, "You only need to do your job well. There is no need for you to ask any other questions."

Starting in 2001, a family member of mine participated in organ-harvesting operations. My family member tried to keep me from knowing about this at the beginning. The hospital authorities selected doctors they trust in different aspects to perform the secretive operations. After a period of time, I found that my family member was in a lot pain, often had nightmares, and appeared panic-stricken. After repeated inquiries, this family member told me the truth. The leader of the hospital had asked my family member to participate in the organ harvesting operations on Falun Gong practitioners as early as 2001. It was 2003 when my family member confessed. A few years after, my family member felt so much pain from participating in this incident that it was impossible to continue with the evildoing. My family member decided to go abroad to get away from this matter.

My family member also told me: "you don't understand my suffering; those Falun Gong practitioners were alive. It might be easier for me if they were dead, but they were alive."

Question: Were there any other doctors from the hospital taking part in the operations of cutting out Falun Gong practitioners' organs?

Answer: I know there were some. All these things have been carried out secretly. Many doctors at our hospital involved were practicum doctors transferred from other hospitals. Because the government does not want to be responsible for Falun Gong practitioners' bodies and lives, their lives are treated as garbage by the regime, and their bodies were used in experiments by new doctors doing their practitcums.

Many doctors came and left the hospital because they suffered a lot after having been involved in these kinds of things. They either requested to be transferred to other places, or changed their names. Some might have been killed to eliminate the evidence, their identity files were taken out from the hospital's filing system, or their names were changed. Nobody knows where the doctors have gone.

The hospital staff all know that the rear part of the hospital is forbidden. It is always watched. The staff avoids talking about the place.

Question: It is said the hospital is equipped with an incinerator. The person whose organs were removed will be burned when he or she is still alive. Is that true?

Answer: The employees in our hospital call this place "the incinerator." Actually, it is a boiler room. Some poor farmers from nearby places were hired to work in the boiler room. They were penniless when they first came here. But they could scrape up some watches, finger rings, necklaces, and so on. The amount is not small. It is said by the employees in the hospital these jewelry and watches were collected from the Falun Gong practitioners whose organs had been removed when they were about to be thrown in the boiler to be burned. It is also said by the employees in the hospital, some were still alive when being thrown into the boiler.

Question: Do they get injection of anesthetic when in surgery?

Answer: Yes. There is a cap to the anesthetic quantity used in mainland China's hospitals. Generally, the supply of anesthetic was determined according to the accommodation of the hospital. To the public, the number of patients in our care appears to be very small, and publicly reported number of surgical procedures performed is quite low. But the equipment and articles used in surgery are abundant. Because the amount of anesthetic is limited, these secret surgeries could not use the normal anesthetic doses. In order to save anesthetic, they economized on the anesthetic used in surgeries on these Falun Gong practitioners. The amount of anesthetic used was very small. However, many whose organs were removed were still alive. You can imagine the pain suffered by the Falun Gong practitioners whose organs were removed.

Question: Are there any survivors among the 6,000 people detained since 2001?

Answer: Nobody has come out alive. The number of them gets smaller and smaller. The Falun Gong practitioners detained at Sujiatun are fewer now than before. But I believe that the sin of removing the organs of the Falun Gong practitioners is still continuing.

Question: Where are these organs usually sold to? Do the higher authorities in the government know about this?

Answer: They are mainly sold to Thailand, but I believe they are also sold to other regions of the world. Nowadays, there are many patients in China who need human skin, corneas, and kidneys for organ transplant surgeries. Many patients have to wait in line to purchase organs. Currently, a kidney can be sold up to the price of 30,000 to 100,000 U.S. dollars. The profit from selling organs is simply too great. The people who benefit from this are not only the top leaders of hospital and the officials of the Chinese Communist Party's Heath Department. This is a crime present across the entire nation. People ranging from government officials to doctors to organ sellers are all involved in this and are profiting greatly.

Question: Why did they target Falun Gong practitioners as the source of organs?

Answer: Because relatives of many Falun Gong practitioners don't even know that their family members were arrested. So if the Falun Gong practitioners are killed, there will be no one to come and claim their dead bodies.

Question: Why did you want to expose this? This may bring great danger to you.

Answer: I know that there are many Falun Gong practitioners who are currently detained at the hospital. I would like to expose this to the international community, so those who are not yet killed can be saved. Also, I would like to expose this as an atonement for my family.

I am not a Falun Gong practitioner. But as a former staff member of the hospital, I have the responsibility to expose the truth, and let the world to save those Falun Gong practitioners who are still alive. Organs of some Falun Gong practitioners are still living on patients' bodies. I would like to call on all society to pay attention to this issue and stop this shocking crime.

just joined and figured i would introduce myself.

i've been vegan and AL since 1991. i live in Tallahassle, FL with my wife, and our seventeen cats, and two dogs.
the cats are all rescued ferals and the dogs are abuse survivors - the bully dog from general neglect and abuse and the little chi from a sick puppy mill.

my wife runs a local animal rights group, and i help her out when i can.
we've been doing daily feral cat work for many years now - feeding, medicating, trapping, taming, and placing in homes (when we can).

to be honest, i'm getting really burned out on the feral cat work. it never ends.

You decide which is more dangerous!

The unemployment figures DON'T INCLUDE the small owner/operator businesses that folded, who never collected unemployment, folks who haven't been able to work during the last 2 - 15 years, or over 3 MILLION HOMELESS victims of economic imbalance AND all of thoise who haven't been in the system during that time. The improvement is only the lose of those who are no longer kept track of. The concept is typically...If we don't see it, it doesn't exist!!
(But I thought that was the philosophy of the communists!?)!

On February 1st, 2007, Peter is scheduled to be released from federal prison. To satisfy the conditions of his probation, he will be required to have a full time job upon release. The prison has informed Peter that he must provide them with a place of employment *this week* or his release plans are in jeopardy.

Gov. Rendell Meets With Anarchist Black Cross

On Friday April 7th, about 25 people joined with organizers of the
Philadelphia Anarchist Black Cross in front of Governor Ed Rendell's
office to voice their opposition to HB213. This bill will label anyone a
"terrorist" who engages in civil disobedience against institutions that harm the earth or animals, and carry with it a 40 year jail sentence and/or $100,000 fine. It is designed to crush the environmental and animal rights movements, as similar tactics would not receive the same charge if waged against an abortion clinic.

After an hour of handbilling the Broad Street rush-hour traffic, two
spokespeople were invited to Governor Rendell's office to speak with him personally about the law. At the meeting, the Governor said that he had not heard of or read the bill he is scheduled to sign. When our people read it to him, he said he had strong reservations about it. He also said that if the Anarchist Black Cross drafted an analysis of HB213, he would consider it while making his decision on whether or not to sign the bill.

We are in the process of writing this analysis with lawyers, and will fax it to the Governor promptly.

We feel that this meeting is a very positive step in bringing down HB213, but we cannot ease up until the law has been totally defeated.

We are calling on all concerned citizens to CALL GOVERNOR RENDELL several times per day within the next week. Remind him that he hates this criminal move by the PA House and Senate as much as we do!

8yr OLD ACTIVIST GET'S STARTED

I have the coolest kid with the biggest heart around!!

Let me back track and I will explain, a few days before Christmas Ace came to me with something that was bothering her and asked me to help. She had heard about Phoenix, a pet bunny that was doused with lighter fluid and set on fire in the Bay Area last October. Phoenix survived but only after recieving third degree burns and losing both his ears all because some 19 year old sick basterd didn't have anything better to do with his time. I immedietly called all my friends and asked for help, of course when I told them this was for Ace everyone volunteered. We decided to hold a bachelor-ette auction with everyone saying they could help or they knew so-and-so who was hot and would do anything for animals/children/fun/ect.

So we all picked our jobs and went our separate ways with everyone doing what they do best. The first thing I did was look for a place to hold it. (Thank you Pine Street Bar and Grill for donating your time and space.) The next thing I did was call the House Rabbit Society and tell them what we wanted to do, they were thrilled.

Now it was time to put Ace to work, remember this is her idea. Sometimes it is hard to remember she is only 8yrs old as we go around to all the local bussinesses asking for sponsorship and donations but my once shy child is working it like a pro, lol. Every day she gets out of school, comes home and does her homework and then goes to work. Some days we pick up friends before we go out and other times we go alone but we always do the same thing.

Here is the drill:

Walk into local bussiness, ask to see a manager, wait while they find a manager, then Ace gives over the fliers Mommy has printed up with Phoenix's picture and a little about us then answers all the question she can with Mommy filling in some of the details. Then Mommy gets to watch while this little girl charms the socks off of grown men and women who can't seem to help her out enough.

Her biggest achievement was her talking the manager of Hooters in Dublin out of $350 in gift certificates including a "All You Can Eat Wings Dinner For 10 People"

Each bussiness I take Ace too takes us about 45 minutes and because she hasn't been excused from School while she does this she get's in about three or four stores a day. But that doesn't mean she only works a few hours a day on this. She was bringing home tiny hands full of change every day with stories if how her friends had given up there lunch/pocket money to help Phoenix so I went and talked to her teacher. He rocks too, he let me put in a piggy bank in the classroom so the kids could watch there money combine and grow to help Phoenix and tomorrow I get to go into the classroom and help the kids make art projects to sell at the bunny-fit. They will sell to even if I have to buy every last one of them. I am going into that class on January 30th and telling these kids there hard work and tallent made a difference.

I am also sending home with the children letters to there parents explaining what we are trying to do, how we are doing it and how there kids can help. We are also asking anybody with ideas to get ahold of us. I did make one thing clear in the letter though: what makes this special is it is a childs project she is doing with friends, lets keep it that way.

This little girl has impressed the H*** out of more then just me. I got a phone call yesterday afternoon from a big company that wants to remain unnamed but when I heard about who they were I immedietly went into a big speach of how this was not my project and this is what is being done by an 8yr old ect. ect. I spoke for about 5 minutes before the lady told me that she had called to tell me the company doesn't fund local charity's but she was so impressed she asked permission for her personally to send Ace a gift. I know what it is but I am not going to tell, it is a suprise for the bunny-fit

The biggest suprise to me is the House Rabbit Society asked for a picture they could publish on there web sight of Ace doing some of her work. I think she is special but to have someone else confirm it just makes me so happy. I spoke to Marcy of the House Rabbit Society and we are trying to get Ace and Phoenix together to meet but it will be hard. You see, I don't really drive, I am a small town girl and Bay Area traffic freaks me out but Ace and I have been invited to the Society to see exactly who and what we are working to help. I know meeting Phoenix would mean the world to Ace and I am going to try to make it happen.

In the mean time we have a little over two weeks until the bunny-fit so Ace and I will continue to go door to door and bussiness to bussiness asking everyone we meet to help so if you see us stop and say "hi" but don't be suprised if you get handed a flier and asked to help us spread the word.

If you have read this and you have any inclination to help please contact me and I will get back to you as soon as possible. There is so much Ace is doing that I just couldn't talk about in here but she is working her little A** off for this.

Ace's personal goal is to make enough money that Phoenix can have the surgery he needs on what is left of his ears. They are closing up with scar tissue and need to be surgicly cleaned up so they don't fill with fluid and he can keep the hearing he has left. We are doing good but I am not sure we can do this alone.

I am personally asking everyone who reads this, as a Mother and an animal lover, to look into your heart and see if there is anything you can do to help. You may have something that can be sold at auction or maybe you can give a donation or maybe you can show up and suport Ace's cause the day of the Bunny-fit. Anything you can do would be gratefully accepted.

This started out as me humoring my daughter but it has turned into so much more. Now my friends and I are making a political statement:

When you're walking along the beach and you notice trash, please pick it up and throw it away, or better yet, recycle it!!

Plastic cannot biodegrade!!!

"The National Academy of Sciences estimates that 6.4 million tons of litter enter the world's oceans each year. Globally, plastic accounts for 60 to 95 percent of that waste, according to a 2002 report in the "Marin Pollution Bulletin," by J.G.B. Derriak. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, 5.5 percent of the plastic consumed int he US in 2001 was recycled.

Hannah Nevins, beachcomber coordinator with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, has found many dead seabirds' stomachs stuffed with plastic. Scientists don't know whether the plastic is poisoning the birds or if they're simply starving to death because the material is blocking their access to pray. Moore said laysan albatross chicks are also frequent victims of plastic-bounty starvation. "They die from false feelings of satiation, which result from being fed bottle caps, cigarette lighters, and toys, which they cannot regurgitate so they stop begging their parents for food." There are a whole bunch of chemicals in plastics that mimic estrogen," Ebbesmeyer said. "If a male mammal ingests them, you're altering the balance between testosterone and estrogen and you wind up with populations worldwide where the males are becoming less male." Marine debris has adversely affected at least 267 species worldwide including 86 percent of sea turtle species, 44 percent of sea bird species and 43 percent of marine mammal species, primarily through ingestion, starvation, suffocation and entanglement, according to D.W. Laist in the book "Marine Debris-Sources, Impacts and Solutions."

In the ocean, where the plastic rises to the surface, there are gyres - where high pressure zones swirl currents together "like a toilet that never flushes", according to Moore. Scientists have given gyres nicknames, like "Eastern Garbage Patch." One such gyre is reported to span 10 million square miles, which makes it as large as Africa.

Here we go again, and it's no consolation that it might be the last
time...in fact, it's critical to eliminate that possibility.

For those of you who have never been in the Ancient Forests, I'd like to
suggest that you cancel your rhumba lesson, dig out {or borrow or buy} a
good pair of hiking boots, and get there NOW! Stay longer than you
intended, and figure out how to help the people who are dedicating their
times & fortunes to this effort to stop one of the baddest rampages going.

otherwise, all you'll have to remind you will be those funky li'l movies
we have been making {cf:<www.havc.org>}, & believe me folks, I have
yet to see or make a movie that captures the AIR, not to mention
the....pure GOOMBAH of these sacred places, these supreme beings,
etc...words don't cover it very well, either.

Charles Hurwitz's Maxxam/Pacific Lumber Company is at it again--this time
trying to liquidate as much old-growth forest as it can in
anticipation of filing for bankruptcy, which it has been threatening for
months. Recently prevented by the State Water Quality Control Board from
logging his desired volume of trees in the Elk River and Freshwater Creek
watersheds, Hurwitz continues to turn to the damaged Eel River watershed,
looking for quick cash at the expense of the redwood
forest.

The so-called "BONANZA" Timber Harvest Plan, (THP) #1-05-097HUM,
would log significant and critical old-growth forest and
landslide-prone areas, as well as destroy habitat for many sensitive,
threatened and endangered species including the northern spotted owl,
marbled murrelet, and coho and chinook salmon. Logging would impact
Nanning Creek, a tributary of the Eel River, which is already listed as
"impaired" under Clean Water Act Section 303(d). Maxxam/PL proposes to log
in this very sensitive area, even as the company has been battling with
the state Water Quality Control Boards over their damaging,
sediment-producing harvesting practices (such as clearcutting)that Hurwitz
refuses to give up.

Marbled murrelet scientists have identified parts of this area as a
priority habitat for the critically threatened seabird. Yet this THP will
enable the harvest of old-growth redwoods currently occupied by nesting
murrelets! Of the 249 acres covered by this THP, 192 acres are occupied
stands for the murrelet.

Logging the "Bonanza" THP would impact just about every sensitive
ecological resource in the area. This is part of Hurwitz's "end
game" for Pacific Lumber. He must not be allowed to rip out precious and
irreplaceable old-growth forest while further degrading water
quality on his way out of Humboldt County.

MAXXAM/PL'S ILLEGAL LOGGING SPREE MUST STOP!
